Don't Get Stopped By Highway Robbery!
Recently there have been a slew of scammers sending texts that claim to be related to unpaid tolls. Like any fast-paced scheme, they create a sense of urgency and demand that you use the included link to pay a delinquent toll fee. Often, these fees are very small and people will just pay them out of fear, thinking they will receive an expensive ticket if they do not follow the instructions.
These attempts follow the common pattern of a classic scam - unexpected text/call, sense of urgency, and an untrustworthy link. However, due to the small amount requested and the fact that many toll booths now have an electronic "missed toll" follow up method, many people are falling for this - and losing much more than the small fee in the process. If you input information into the linked site, the scammers take your personal and financial information and are able to take more money fraudulently from your attached accounts.
What should you do if you receive one of these messages?
First of all, NEVER click the link. Legitimate toll companies do not reach out via text to request toll fees be paid. If you believe you may legitimately owe a toll based on recent travel, visit the official website of that toll road or reach out to their customer service directly.
Delete the text message, or use your phone to flag it as spam so that your cellular provider and phone manufacturer can learn to block messages from this source: on iOS devices, click "Report Junk" under the message; on Android devices, tap the three dots in the top right corner and then "Report Spam".
As always, if you believe you have been the victim of a fraudulent transaction, reach out to our fraud department through the number on the back of your card. Learn more about reporting fraud here: Report Fraud
